FPS Drops during more strenuous gaming.

Hi guys,

Was hoping I wouldn't have to come back here again with an issue. But alas here I am. I can be playing BF3 with ultra not inc. MSAA and be hitting 60FPS onmy 2560x1440 display. Now, before I SLI'd I would still play on these settings and never(!) had an FPS drop. However, with the new SLI setup & BTK map pack I've started getting these bizzare FPS drops. They seem to coincide with drops in % usage of the GPU, see attached images.

Any ideas?

Regards,
Mike

Post your VRAM usage as well please.
As in your last thread I was posting that your main problem was lack of VRAM at that res.
While others said it was lack of power from the PSU.

1280MB @ 2560x1440 res I did it myself for over a year & had the same problems with newer games unless I dropped the settings right down.

Garsands - I dont have an image for VRAM, but I'm pretty sure it's stuck at max for both cards, for the duration of the game period. It doesn't explain these random drops in FPS every 20 seconds or so

chief, no I haven't, but I could try that. If it looks too bad I'll take em back up to ultra though.

Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

It does explain why it drops every 20 seconds your card is looking for more Vram it can't find it, but it wants more so it gives up drops the FPS then starts all over again.
I had been at the stage myself for over a year no longer luckly as I have said many of a time trying to help you understand.

I have even posted my VRAM usage at the res that hits over 1600mb

again I repeat 1280MB @ 2560x1440 is a no no during more strenuous gaming.

Look at what antran posted 'I'm playing at 1080p using 1.4gb vram all ready.' that's @ 1920x1080 using 1400mb you only have 1280mb.

Buying a new PSU was not going to solve your problem but I fully understand that you have people tellling you different things & you got to chose who you think is right.

It's just a shame that there seems to be lots of members on here that pull info out of there behind with nothing to back it up & it ends up with people wasiting good money.

With your spec me a gaming system there was so many members telling you that a 1280mb Vram card would be fine at 2560x1440 maybe that's why you still find it hard to accept what I am telling you.

From your other thread

It depends on what you are looking for & how much you have to spend.

1. keep cards change to a 1080/1200 res monitor play most games at max settings (but still a ? on power supply)
Cost you £100 if you sell your old monitor aswell.

2. keep what you got but not be able to play games at max settings & your monitor may not display a lower res very well.
Cost nothing. (I been at this stage for 16 months just came out of it was not fun times.)

3. Sell your 2 cards & buy a better single card 3GB or two cards.
Cost £440 - £880+ taking away what you get for your old cards.
oh + a 1000w power supply.

I will leave you be now as I know when I am hitting my head agaist a brickwall.

Not sure if I am coming across as I am having a go at you but I am not, I am truly trying to help out a fellow 2560x1440 gamer.

Goodluck

I did heed your words Garsand in the last thread. I took great notice, but I explicitly said that having invested in two cards, there was no plausible way that I could buy another new card and just lose a huge amount of money reselling my current two. I bought a new PSU because 1) The advice to be from other members was to do so, 2) In preparation for any future upgrades. You even mention in your quote that I should perhaps think about a new PSU.

I'm sorry if you feel like your banging your head against a brick wall, I have been a contributer on many forums in the past and often I too get frustrated when I feel like I'm just not getting through and I apologise if I come across as a brickwall.

I have accepted the VRAM issue and I don't deny that it will impact performance, the reason I created this thread however, was not because I don't listen to anyone's advice and thus was effectively asking a question answered in another thread, but because I thought it was an entirely separate issue. How was I to know that a lack in VRAM causes random drops in FPS?

Anyway, I greatly appreciate your help.

Regards,
Mike
