FPS Drops in Games

Hey all, I have a problem with my PC but I have no idea where...

I'm new so please don't get mad. :D

Basically, when playing high end games my FPS drops.

Details of my Machine:

AMD Phenom II X6 1055t Processor with Good Heatsink.

Radeon HD 6590 Overclock Edition - Dual Fan edition.

Two sticks of 4GB Ram - 8GB Overall.

Samsung HD753LJ Hard Drive.

600W Power Supply.

Any problems here?

well the 6590 (unless you mean 6950) is nt a that great gfx card so u will probably see some fps drops if your trying to play too high settings, if you did mean 6950 maybe the phenom ii is bottlenecking a tad because games only use 4 cores, and its not as fast as the i5.
or maybe your using vsync with only double buffering which will make some games when dropping below 60 fps go straight to 30, and nothing inbetween, this can sometimes be fixed with a program called d3doverrider

Sorry! Yes I did mean the 6950! Mistype by me!

Would this require me to overclock my processor?

Also, what does this program do? 'd3doverrider'?

yeh there doesnt seem to be anythig overly wrong with the build, so overclocking the cpu will give you a few more fps.. yeah some games when enabling vsync, crysis 1 on dx10 is a prime example will juist keep dropping to 30 fps whenever the computer cant handle 60 and never 40 -45 etc. so disabling vsync will result in higher fps, but if you hate screen tearing d3doverrider, which i believe comes bundled with rivatuner which is free, means you can force triple buffering and fix the problem, if your not using vsync however, then thats not the problem.
what games are you playing? some games are just overly demanding like metro 2033 and gta iv, and will see fps drops on even the highest gfx cards

No, it actually drops. Like I'll be running around on Diablo 3 on any graphical setting, absolutely fine then encounter a group and it will drop throughout the entire fight. Or sometimes it won't drop. It's totally random. It's just quite annoying, as I know I have a half decent PC.

you should notice a drop when you encounter AI anyway when i play killing floor my 5770 will run at a constant 91 fps and wont change then i will encouter zombies and it will drop to 50 i agree with the other guys i think you just need to take a look at your graphics settings

See the diablo forums there are thread after thread on FPS drops. In your case I'd look to see what settings people have applied for their AMD cards, for example on some Nvidia cards they say turn off some ambient occlusion.

Also depends on your drivers you may want to try newer ones or rolling back.

yeah some games have bugged or 1 overly demanding gfx setting, especialy relatively new unpatched releases, ie 1 setting turned off will drastically increase your framerate, and yeh and what the other guy said about updating, /rolling back drivers

Sorry, been away for a while. jamiehavok cracked it. Vsync. I hated screentear but coming across to a none 'Techy' it basically means 'Get rid of screentear'. So turned that off and everythings running like a dream. Thanks guys.

download that, ignore the actual rivatuner program, but after you install it there will be a program in the rivatuner folder called d3doverrider, run that and by default there will be 2 options, force vsync (sometimes games dont even have a vsync option, and the force in the catalyst control centre doesnt always work) and force triple buffering, both checked by default, triple buffering, basicly may make your games run smoother with vsync on. i dont know if your using fraps or msi afterburner to measure your framerate, i like msi afterburner because you can display your gfx card usage, and heat on screen too. http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm
