Hi,

I've read the sticky post in the forum but it doesn't really answer my questions.

I want to improve the sound for my PC which I mainly use for FPS games. For the price I think the Creative Z will give the best bang for my £££ http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SC-087-CL

My question is, what wired gaming headphone will utilize this the soundcard the best, do I need a 5.1 headset or can a USB one be used.

2. If I use a wireless usb based headset, will it still use the soundcard for processing audio before sending it to me.

thanks for your help

IF you buy that soundcard you will need a pair of 'phones with standard 3.5mm jacks - a USB pair will not be compatible.

1). Depends on your budget, and you can also get 5.1 USB headsets. It is certainly worth noting, however, that stereo is superior to 5.1 for fps gaming. Kingston HyperX Cloud is a very good bet for ~£60, at around £120 the Beyer DT770s are excellent too.

2). No, because the soundcard is not USB compatible.

On a side note, you really really do not want wireless for fps gaming, due to the lag times generated.

Hi at the moment I'm using the Kingston*HyperX Cloud for fps gaming and they are great but I'm going to be upgrading to the dt770s before the new year :)
Oops meant to say I'm using the creative zx sound card

An alternative would be the Asus Xonar U7 external sound card which easily matches the SBZ for sound quality, avoids the noisy PC internals which reduces the chance of interference being picked up and gives you a nice volume control knob on your desk.

As for headsets (headphone with built in mic) then the HyperX Cloud is the best value for money at £65. Improving on those gets expensive as you can either get something like the Sennheiser G4ME One or Zero (£190) or team a Hi-Fi headphone such as the Beyerdynamic DT770 (80ohm) or AKG K612 pro (£105) with a clip on or mod-mic.

AKG K702 over 701 every time because it doesn't have those damned torture bumps on the headband.

Once bass port modded (just a quick removal of some sticky pads) you have a very good all round headphone too for music, gaming and movies.

thank you all for the advise :)

Are music headphones such as Sennheiser Momentum's any good for FPS's
Tested them recently for music and I enjoyed them.

The best headphones for FPS are all "music headphones" but the Momentums are far from the best. The Momentum has an output impedance of just 18ohms so if it were used with an average sound card, which has an output impedance of between 10ohms and 38ohms) the bass will probably end up as a muddy, boomy, poorly controlled mess and that's the last thing you want with FPS gaming. If I were using a Momentum I'd be looking at pairing it with a small portable amp with an output impedance of less than 2ohms - then you might get a tight, crisp bass.

If I wanted a set just for competitive FPS then I would use AKG K702 or Audio Technica AD700X as they are simply the best for the job.

In the real world though I do like some bass so use AKG K702 with the bass port mod, a simple removal of two internal sticky pads and this adds a substantial amount of bass without messing up the high frequency detail.

For a pretty exhaustive list of how music headphones do for gaming (competitive and fun) check out MadLustEnvy's amazing thread on head-fi....
