Hi, im replacing my low profile budget nvidia card (220GT) with ATI 4890 gaming DX10 card, and I was just wondering what my performance would be in games such as TF2, CoD 5, etc on high settings

3GB ram
2.4GHz dual core processor
hd 4890

anyone ?

It would be excellent - more than 60FPS at almost all times in the games you mention at highest settings. The 4890 really is a nice card, it is a fair bit faster than a 5770, but it is hotter, uses more power and is not DX11.

When you say dual core processor - what exatly have you got? As an Athlon 64 X2 will slow you down, but a core 2 should be fine.

I think cmndr andi is down playing this change of card slightly, the difference will be staggering :)

Thank you for a quick response!

Could you tell me how much more powerful would a 5830 be ? Also, how much more power does it eat ?

Thanks!

Edit: cmdr, Yes,, its a Athlon 64 x2.

Ah, in that case you may want to consider scaling down the graphics card upgrade a bit and put the money away for a future CPU upgrade. If you go for a super powerful card like a 4980 or 5830 now - your CPU will limit your performance in many games and the extra graphics card power will effectively be wasted.

Do you have a s939 X2 CPU or an AM2 one? If it is a AM2 then depending on your motherboard you may be able to do a simple (and relatively cheap) drop-in CPU upgrade. However, if you are socket 939 then there are CPU only upgrade options you should consider - you will want to sell up and move over to a new system (fortunately the market for s939 CPUs and motherboards is crazy - you may be able to upgrade to modern kit for basically no money).

if you state the motherboard make and model, someone could then check the cpu support list to see what the maximum it will take is.
