Hey guys, I'm looking for an fps limiter to stop screen tear in some of my games.

I don't want to use vsync or tbuffering.

Are there there any decent options or should I just invest in decent monitor?

Andy

Its ok for some games but causes a lot of mouse lag in others. I know some people can't notice it, but I can unfortunately. A lot of my games are a much smoother experience with it off but tearing can obviously be a problem.

Get Riva Tuner, install it, go to the folder you installed it to, go into Tools, run D3DOverrider.

It'll give you Triple Buffered Vsync in pretty much any game, and is far better than any in game option.

Limiting your FPS won't stop screen tearing, tearing occurs when the frames are out of sync with your screen, mealy limiting the number of frames doesn't stop them being out of sync.

Indeed but it does lesson the tearing with limiting the fps.

Agreed - DVDOverrider is excellent but it can cause problems for some older games or even new releases it would seem...

force unleashed II had very choppy cutscenes with DVDOverrider enable, laughable really. Only way to get that game running smooth without screentear was to use a FPS Limiter. Still thats just an example, otherwise DVDOverrider is pretty darn good...

OP - google FPS Limiter GUI. One or two options out there.. But, it will not stop the screen tearing. The very best option is V Sync with triple buffer enabled. Its how I run all my games, works fine for me.

Well I'm using radeonpro beta tool to enable vsync and triple buffering in D3d but even with tbuffering enabled its really laggy in a lot of my games. I'll d3d overrider a shot.

Edit: So if the lag is caused when it goes slightly above 60fps when vsync is enabled. If I enable vsync and then limit the fps would that mean no tearing and smooth mouse control?

The post also talks about the issues said here.

I cant get this to work :( well worked fine last night but this morning it doesnt seem to do anything.

My problem is with Sims 3, it doesnt have v-sync option and it will happily use 100% of my gpu. Running max res and every graphic setting as high as it will go and the game still runs at 600 FPS, after few minutes play my temps are over 100c. Thought I would be clever and set all graphic options as low as they would go, crappy game still uses max GPU and MSI overdrive was saying it was running at 1300 FPS :(
