Does anybody else here suffer with motion sickness in certain games especially some FPS.

I find it strange some games don't bother me at all but others really bad. I have had some bad motion sickness when playing HL2 for long periods.

Is there a reason why this happens and also is there anything you can do to help prevent it apart from not playing FPS of course :D

HL2 is bad for me cant really play for more than 30min but counter strike source isn't as bad which doesn't make much sense :D

HL2 uses a default field of view of 75 whereas most other fps' have it at 90.

When playing hl2 enter this into the console 'fov 90' to change the field of view. It should help most people :)

EDIT: This applies to most other source games as well.

You can do one of two things to (hopefully) sort motion sickness out in FPS games: Change your field of view option in the game, or adust how far away you sit.

The FOV of a first-person game is created in order to best show how much a player would see from where they sit in relation to the monitor. Since developers have no real idea how far away you sit, they pick a single number and stick with that. So for anyone that sits too close or too far, they get too much/little of the viewing area, so it plays tricks with their vision, giving them motion sickness. Thus the above should fix it.

I read somewhere that if you turn down the muse sensitivity in-game then it helps with this motion sickness malarkey. Can't say for certain though as I've never experienced it.

I Felt abit sick playing Prey but that was due to the whole flipping around and being chucked around in portals, anti-grav, and walking on walls and ceilings and fighting upside down :(

Same here, and that was only the demo, i haven't got the full game yet!

oh boy still recall playing AvP and when playing the Alien race, that view omg.... instant puke.

Few years later it was during the boat mission in HL2, even more vomit inducing fun there.

Had it in prey somewhat, am glad in many ways they didnt over do the whole yippy look at our physics and portals....

I still recall when they released the anti sick patch for that that changed the Fov view to normal.

Sorry to hear about your problem, it's not at all unusual and HL2 does seem to be the game that people with this problem experience the most difficulties with. There was a chap that posted more or less exactly your post about 6 months ago, I'm not sure what the outcome was. You've obviously found that some games effect you more than others so at least you can concentrate on the ones that don't effect you so much. Fresh ginger is supposed to be good for travel sickness, I guess powedered ginger might have some effect so a in all seriousness a cup of tea with a few ginger nuts .... There are also wrist bands for travel sickness that exert pressure on acupuncture points which might help. Good luck.

Doesn't work at all. fov 90 in the console does not do a thing ingame. If it did, the game would change view in front of me in the middle of the console menu, but it just stays the same.

Got it in HL2 but only in that motorboat vs. helicopter section. That was quite an open level as opposed to the usual corridor environments, and there were loads of rocks that caused the boat to jerk and bump and sometimes capsize. Reminded me of feeling carsick as a child. Here's a thought, how come loads of people who got carsick as children get over it when they grow up?

The first time it has happened to me was actually yesterday. I woke up and i was dizzy. But the previous day, the refresh rate of my screen was really bugging me, even though it is how i always have it at 75Hz. I was walking from my bedroom towards bathroom to get a shower and i was so dizzy i nearly fell over. I put this down to playing WoW for about 6 hours straight until about midnight, not actually getting to sleep until about 1.30AM, and then having to get up at 8AM for college.

The best thing i can suggest is upping your refresh rate to 72Hz minimum. Also, see if you can find some sort of command to change the fov. I know in HL2 if you set sv_cheats 1, then you can use the command thirdperson to change to third-person view which should give you a better FOV.
