FPS - Motion sickness

Got it in HL2 but only in that motorboat vs. helicopter section. That was quite an open level as opposed to the usual corridor environments, and there were loads of rocks that caused the boat to jerk and bump and sometimes capsize. Reminded me of feeling carsick as a child. Here's a thought, how come loads of people who got carsick as children get over it when they grow up?

Yeah I'm somewhat suprised that I NEVER get sickness from playing games. I used to get quite bad carsickness as a child (especially if reading) and even now if I've got a hangover I can't go more than about 20mins in a car without feeling nauseous.

I do sit very close the monitor however.

Doesn't work at all. fov 90 in the console does not do a thing ingame. If it did, the game would change view in front of me in the middle of the console menu, but it just stays the same.
Try typing 'sv_cheats 1' and then 'fov 90'. You should notice a difference, if not then change it to something drastic like 30 or 150 first so that you can check that its working.

I have always had this issue with FPS, especially the original doom/quake/Half Life

I do find it has eased in recent years not sure why this is perhaps its the lcd displays.

I used to get really car sicky feeling playing the wipeout games on playstation as well so its not just FPS.

When I got my first ever PC and had Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I felt pretty badly sick when I played it one Saturday morning with a steaming hangover :D

HL-2 did, but changing 'fov' helped it stop...
Try typing in the console, "sv_cheats 1" and then "fov 90." Also add "default_fov 90" in the config.cfg just as a second measure. It doesn't work for some, but it worked so i was just able to compensate for the amount of motion
Get it in Far Cry which i just started playing :o

I recall Soldier of Fortune 1 and Half-Life 1 making me feel like that. Prey has a bit as well. Me mate can't handle the plane bit in Call of Duty United Offensive which I had no problem with.

only game that ever made me sick was Alien Vs Predator, when playing as the Alien, wall grabbing and running about like mad. Your brain doesnt know which way is up and it messes it up.

However, for everygame that causes motion sickness people have come up with ways to help, just a matter of using google.

I know for halflife 2 there are a couple of options you can change and setting the FOV (field of view) to a bigger number.

HL2 uses a default field of view of 75 whereas most other fps' have it at 90.

When playing hl2 enter this into the console 'fov 90' to change the field of view. It should help most people :)

EDIT: This applies to most other source games as well.
i've never had an issue with it. however i remember a few months after HL2's release and these threads started poppingup.

and this did fix many peoples problems :)

My partner suffers from motion sickness badly. Not just FPS but anything that is 3D and involves camera spinning. It's annoying as just 2-3 minutes on an FPS and she well feel sick, she has tried travel sickness tablets but they didn't work.
It's a shame as she loves games and is quite good at them. :(

Half Life, Opposing Force, SWAT 3 and HL 2. Something about those games just hit all the 'Urgh' button! :( I had the same problem with Rainbow Six Vegas on the 360. I now avoid first person shooters now for precisely this reason.

But Quake, Flashpoint, Battlefield 1942 & Vietnam never troubled me in the slightest.

I used to have the problem loads with older FPS games (anything before AvP 1...though, of course, the Alien viewpoint quickly led to a sickalicious feeling) but modern ones are generally alright. Unless they use motion blur *gag*

I still get really bad motion sickness if I'm watching someone else play a game from over their shoulder. It's rather odd, actually...

a friend of mine told me that motion sickness is where

the brain thinks the body is poisend due to either looking at something iffy or feeling motion so it counters it by trying to make you sick weird lol

things like mentioned above, motion blurr will only trick the mind more into thinking your having hullcinations wich would make sense

That makes perfect sense actually, as a. you're looking into the screen from a weird angle and b. you're not initiating the movement so you're not prepared for it, whereas the player is more immersed and his brain anticipates the movement (and indeed in some cases you see FPS players ducking and weaving along with the on-screen movements:p).

Oh anyone who wants to get REALLY sick, try loading up Q3A, preferably on one of the space platforms maps, and type /set fov 180 into your console!:D

HL2 was horrible. so much hype waited ages and got motion sickness after 2 hours of play. Never touched the game since and gone off most FPS games.

Exactly the same problem as my partner, she loves games too, but gets ill with anything from Zelda on the wii to WoW and Oblivion on the PC. Its strange, sometimes she can play them for hours and feel ok, then the next time she plays 5 mins later she turns a lovely shade of green. She's also tried all the travel sickness pills and none of it works.

She also does have proper travel sickness, she can't be in a car for long periods of time without feeling ill and if on a bus/train, has to have a good view out of the window and not sitting opposite to the direction of travel!

Anyway, yeah, I think its a pretty common thing, I know a few people that have similar problems but perhaps on a lesser scale.
