FPS online play recommendation

Hello fraggers (after all these years, that still sounds rude to me:rolleyes:).

OK, a bit of background: I've been regularly playing UT GOTY (deathmatch and CTF) edition since 2003 and for the last year been playing UT2004 (DM only). I was eagerly awaiting UT3 but the beta demo just seems to suck and I am greatly dissapointed that I find the feel of ut2004 better. I hope this improves later, but for now, I've uninstalled the demo.

I bought the XBOX and found Gears of War on XBOX live really good, and even though I'm fairly good at it I find that the gamepad seriously lacks the superior manouverability/aiming combo of a keyboard and mouse setup. I'll probably get this again when it gets released on the PC (would I need another subscription for online play on the pc?)

Yesterday, I tried the Call of Duty 4 demo and I was impressed but I don't know how the game is online multiplayer.

I almost never play the "story" levels and go straight for online games. The last "story" I played was the original Half Life and frankly I just don't have enough time like I used to.

So, what FPS games would you recommend for good online play?

Battlefield 2 is good if you want realism, there are umpteen mods out there if you want it uber realistic and teamplay centered.

Quake wars is another teamplay game, but movement and combat has more of a deathmatch feel to it

The obvious ones CS:S, Quake, UT3 is incoming very soon are also good for a play.
You could download Farcry as its available free now.

Rainbow Six vegas has a few nice modes, but sadly people dont seem to play it much compared to the above.

Crysis is around the corner, i didnt like it personally but worth looking at

Xbox wise; Halo 3, Crackdown, GRAW2 would get my recommendations for online play. Although bear in mind Halo 3 has a absolutely aweful way of connecting players as there is no game lobby its all done via your friends list

You are spoilt for chioice really

Fortress Forever/TF2 depending if you want TFC style or a slightly toned down and new version which is also quite fun

Get TF2, based around multiplayer you'd enjoy it ..... pretty much everyone else does except for die hard TFC fans who think it should be TFC with new graphics

Yep, buy yourself the Orange Box, TF2 is great. Its ideal for people who don't have much time to constantly game imo, easy to pick up and go..good laugh too! Plus you'll have Portal HL2/HL2EP:1/HL2EP:2 also.

I think you will find that is fortress forever

Re-read before you try to post a condescending reply. FF died a horrible death already where the ex-tfc people didnt get on with it. A lot grudgingly gave TF2 a go and decided to whine ever since because its not TFC.

theres 200+ dedicated servers last i checked, i would hardly call that "dying a horrible death"
You know as well as i, that these servers would migrate to TF2 if FF is really dead

It doesnt take a genius to work out TF2 would be more popular, it is aimed at casual gamers who hold the majority share of the audience

Just bought The Orange box for TF2.

I've been reading this forum a lot recently and I can't believe there aren't many Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 players around.

I think I would still be playing CTF in UT99 if it wasn't for my crappy installation last time which messed my mouse/graphics up. I've been playing DM in UT2004 for over a year now.

I hope TF2 is as good as everyone says.

That just goes to show how one mans steak is another mans beef burger. I have found the UT3 demo, particularly DM on Shangri-la, to be one of the best gaming experiences I have had for a few years, and I can't wait for the full release.

Can't comment on TF2, download through steam is still only 96% complete, but I'm hoping it is as good as what people are generally saying.

UT99 was great, I played it for a few years right up until the community pretty much died away, and that was at least 3 years ago... so not too suprising not many people play it. :)

I had a quick play on UT3, the gameplay felt quite like UT99 from what I could see, if they get it right it could dominate multiplayer FPS. :D Instagib CTF here I come.

I can only really stand playing online games if I'm in a team/community, which fizzled out for UT99 fairly early.

They stopped updating PURE/CHSP as well, were loads of aimbots floating about.

I received the Orange Box and I was playing TF2 a lot last night. Initial impressions are good but the game play seems so basic. Also, the respawn timeout got a little frustrating. I think TF2 is really for people who understand coordination and team play.
