building an i7 920 system with 750W PSU and an ATI HD 5850 and im wondering if this case is a good choice for being quiet and for being cool. give me your thoughts about this case and maybe a few alternatives?

They are great cases.
Im not sure about the noise personally but a lot of that is choice of fans.

its a great case.

looks nice
nice to work on
lots of cooling options
quite quiet

as a compromise between noise and cooling its better at cooling

alternatives
'antec sonata elite' will be quieter and cheaper but with less cooling
'antec p183' is similar with slightly better build and scalability for more £

I've got a r2 and its a very nice case, as said before to build with its lovely. Looks pretty smootha and runs fairly quitely, im was not too fussed with noise but this cases is loverly, if I turn down my cpu fan it is very silent. Their fans are ace as well, head right next to them and they are hard to hear :)

Go for it, they are excellent cases, i recently bought one for a friend who i was building a system for, liked it so much i'm going to be buying one soon! Amazing finish, sturdy, great build quality, great cable management and very quiet!

Best thing you can do is google "Fractal Design R2 review" from what I have read their air flow could be better when compared to other cases in the same price range. Must say I have a hankering for a Silverstone fortress case but cannot justify the price to myself. You might want to decide if you want a really quite case which might hurt in in terms of overclocking or something a bit louder but won't suffer from heat soak.
