Fractal R3

nice improvements, looks like bit more gap for the hdds to breathe also... but they still aint solved the issue from the R2 with longer graphic cards the R3 is still 11.4 inches and the 5970 is 12 inches+.....

If only they made it more spacious and highend friendly such a shame.....

also according too there face book page it says currently shipping? so hopefully the R3 is in soon...

Interested to see more about the define xl still considering other cases to get even though it's near certain i will get a 700D but that xl does look pretty good.

I know a certain Canadian place which has sold them for a few weeks but it at least has a reset button now, mind, I'd recommend to anyone without a fractal case :)

I need this Fractal Design R3 ASAP

you can also dremel the HDD bay so it can fit longer cards..

Point is you shouldn't have to mod a fairly expensive modem case to fit modern hardware in. My Mini P180 fits huge cards with the bottom hdd bay taken out. Modular for the win

The one thing I don't like about the case R2 is the wobbly HDD trays. Is it true they wobble or was the review I watched simply just wrong? Have they improved it in the R3?

I'm deciding between the Silverstone Fortress FT02 or Define R3 or going that extra mile with the Lian Li PC-P80B.

Lian Li's I personally think are a rip off. I see people raving about the Silverstone Fortress and can't understand why. Is it because you think the air cooling performance will be good? Most other cases do not have that internal rotation for a reason in my opinion. The way it sucks air in from the bottom, surely is less effective than standard front case intakes on the basis that there is more room around front intakes and not a floor/carpet full of dust as the intake? Please someone point me to a review where they have tested the thermal performance and that it excels beating other cases and I will change my mind :) Or is the appeal that it does "ok" air cooling whilst being quiet? I just don't get it, especially considering the high price.

Yeah I have a speadsheet I have made of potential case purchases, and when I look at the dimensions of cases there are some really long ones out there. I know they attempt to cater for long gfx cards, but I'd rather have a thinner (width) and shallow (depth) case. I don't care how high it is. In fact, as long as it's not silly high and fits under a desk great. But the cases that are over 500mm deep are pushing it for me, and over 550mm is just too deep for most areas you would keep a case imo.
I just think cases like the Antec 1200 with 3 intakes on the front with simple basic airflow look the best for cooling....even over say the HAf series with one larger intake...or is this not the case? < see the pun? ;)

Personally I didn't specifically choose the FT02 because of the assumed improved air cooling, in actuality the look of it accounts for most of my preference. I also like the way all the back (the top) part is hidden and cables are coming out of one gap so I can easily manage the cables. I was even looking around if there was a normal version to a case like that.

There's one review I read and it did do thermal tests which you can read here:
http://ksstudios.com/SilverStoneFT02.html

I didn't take a proper look to know exactly if it was a well done thermal test, but an easy google search should find out if it is actually an improved air cooling solution.

Lian Li's are a tad quite expensive I agree with you on that one, but the PC-P80B looks good and caters to my needs, so that's the only reason why I'm willing to spend that extra and go with it.

Agreed, its this factor that stopped me from considering it as a mid-high end case, you cant release something on market thats barely squeezes in a 5970 card ! Its like the Fortress 2 also who wants to squeeze in there lovely new card frankly.

And also other popular cards like 5870 /480 arent that much smaller either so having 1 inch gap or so at front is not that good there should be much more space.

You shouldnt have to dremel or mod it either thats just poor engineer/designing imo.

If anything with the 8 + 1 optional 3.5 caddy this makes the perfect server case.

You know what i just saw the same review on youtube, does anyone own the case and would like to comment if the hdds are wobbly in there caddy on the R2 ?

To be honest, I disagree with the idea that it was a mistake. Their design intention was quite clear on the R2: low air flow and near-silent operation at reasonable cost compared to the Antec 180. Whilst modularisation of the HDD bays is a great idea when done well, it costs money in design and manufacture and is relatively hard to do correctly. Similarly extending the length of the case to accommodate 12+ inch cards is possible but would increase cost at a time when buyers were very cost-conscious and bring its' price point perilously close to the P180, which IMO would have been bad news for them as a new company. As it is they've designed a case which will accommodate most of the high-end GFX cards, just not the Dual-GPU monsters. The R3, as it is just a refresh of the R2, isn't the sort of major redesign in which you'd expect to see it addressed and stay at roughly the same price.

I would level the criticism at the CM690-II however. It's obviously intended to be a performance chassis with high air-flow and cooling, but by all accounts space for 12inch cards was removed in the update from the CM690. In addition Coolermaster isn't exactly new to this game and don't have the brand weaknesses that would bring.
