I'm currently planning the engine swap on my F800S and the guy who's hoist I was going to borrow has backed out.

Anyone have any ideas of where I can get hold of, borrow or buy a bike frame hoist in the Hertfordshire area? It seems that unless I can find a way of lifting the frame, it's a bit of a non-starter.

Plan B would be to wheel the thing into my shed and lash something to the roof, but I'm not particularly confident about that idea...

Yes,because you need to remove the swingarm from the back of the engine. The frame will not suport itself with no engine in it.

ahhhh got you.

You could the same job with a car jack, a pair of axle stands raised up off the ground ( sat on something to gain height ) & a piece of pipe thru the frame.

just in case he can't find a frame hoist that is ;)

Your ideas are intriguing. I will research them extensively.

String the back of it to the roof of the shed. And use a couple of mates for the positioning work.

Step 1 of this plan is going to be the inevitable "clear out the shed". Step 2 is going to be "get bike into shed". This might be problematic.

I am sure you can hire these from HSS.

This sort of thing? http://www.hss.com/g/67715/500kg-Engine-Crane-Folding.html

actually you don't even need axle stands & a piece of pipe, you just need something to go under the back of the frame once the back wheel & swingarms off, a decent saw horse or such like would do the job, i mean it's going to be supporting considerably less than 50% the weight of the bike.

I see what you're saying. However, I've got a lack of anything useful like a sawhorse lying around, so for £40 a crane for the weekend looks ideal.

axle stands and block of wood .. or lock the pegs (bolt though the gap so they cant fold ) and jack bike up and fit axle stands to pegs
