framerate in games

Hi all

I'm new to modern pc gaming. Spec in sig below.

I have a question about framerate control in games.

I have 2 games now (lol I know). Deus ex human revolution and planet coaster alpha. In both games I have to choose the frequency of my monitor (75hz) in the graphical settings and then in the game it pretty much locks that frequency in as a maximum fps.

So how is it that many people here say they get 200 fps, 300 fps etc on various games?

Thanks

Freesync only works if your framerate dips below the frequency of the monitor.

I can't see that happening on Human Revolution.

People like to think that 300fps unlocked framerate gives them an advantage in twitchy first person shooters like CounterStrike: GO

Vsync, freesync and Gsync attempt to match the graphics card output to the monitors refresh rate, with freesync and gsync having variable monitor refresh rates so it has more room to get the best out of your system.

If you switch all of that off the graphic card will push out as many frames as it can manage, even though your monitor may not actually be showing all of them. Frame rate is all well and good to show the raw performance, but you're better off using which ever sync option you have to get the best experience.

Freesync does not only work blow the refresh rate of the monitor. It works all the way through the range, max, min and now even below on some monitors thanks to LFC Low Framerate Compensation.

@OP
Go into any game and disable Vsync, this will now give you unlimited fps on that game.
Go into Crimson AMD drivers, make sure Freesync is enabled under display, next create a game profile for the game you playing and set max fps one below refresh rate so 75hz 74fps

Now you will have Freesync without vsync.

Thanks guys.

Follow up question. Is it normal for gpu usage to be less than 100% in games and for it to jump around? In the firestrike benchmark it is at 100% constantly but in games it's not.

This is normal if you matching the max refresh rate. For example if you have 75hz and are getting 75fps your GPU might only need 70% of its power to get that performance.
