I want to do a day trip to France on Thursday, possibly stay the night at a bnb then come home on the Friday.

Haven't got a clue where to go or what to do, so any ideas would be great. Thanks :)

Boulogne-Sur-Mer is a reasonably charming town ~20km south of Calais (if you can get through Calais). Hotel B+B is a cheap motel type place on the outskirts of town popular with Brits and with easy access to a Buffalo Grill restaurant (I'm a big fan of these places). If you want something a bit more personal you could probably find a Chambre D'Hote which is more like a British B&B but you eat your dinner with your French host as well.

I went to Boulogne on a school trip. It was horrible. It was also in 1992.

Bruges is doable as long as there aren't any major delays at the crossings.

Also if you're interested in WW1 stuff there are quite a few WW1 battlefields / memorials in reasonably short driving distance. e.g. Vimy (preserved trenches + canadian memorial), the Somme (Lochagnar crater, Newfoundland memorial, Thiepval), Ypres (watch the last post at 8pm).. more that I've forgotten... Some are small so you could do a few in a day but it depends how much you like driving.

If you have family there is a free zoo in lille

yes as other people have mentioned it is a risk you take. I took a trip about a year ago. Woke up in the morning for a 10:50 crossing and Eurotunnel were advising people to take alternative transport. Booked a ferry for 12:30 (for £120) and due to queues got the next ferry after that - so after the time difference didn't get to france til about 3pm. This was while operation stack was in effect as well

Eurotunnel refunded the cost of the ferry though and it didn't make a huge difference as it was a week trip :)

Went to France a month ago and it was fine. Get the ferry from poole to cherbourge instead of the Calais on for a hassle free trip.

all very well for a 5h+ ferry journey that costs a lot more than a calais crossing (and is further from crawley)! :)

I recommend portsmouth to bilbao :D

Tbh Northern France isn't exactly a target-rich environment in my experience - it's basically the same as Southern England but with better food, cheaper wine and shops that shut for lunch. I believe that stretch of coast line is called the cap gris-nez, or cape grey-nose.

Can you get to St. Malo?

Lovely town and you can get some cheaper places to stay just outside of the wall or plenty of options within the wall.

Ahh, moule frites :( I miss France

A friend went to Paris recently - they spent a fortune as there are so many sales on at the moment with some places discounting up to (genuine) 80% off. They stayed in an AirBnB.

I was in Brentome this weekend just gone and it's beautiful with great food.

See my gallery for pics
