Hello all,

I Just so happened to find a laptop in the loft the other day...

It's a Dell Inspiron 1545, and it won't turn on, qlthough I think this is due to an utterly flat battery and broken charger port (which if I can source a battery to test the rest of it on I will replace). As far as I can ascertain the processor in it is a Celeron 900.

I'm writing this from an old advent laptop with broken screen hinges, but runs fine. Inside it's got a core 2 duo T2050.

My intentions are to try and amalgamate the best parts of these laptops into one and use it when I'm off at uni ( I'll be taking my rig up as well of course, just something for possible note taking/ general portability without spending money on whole new laptop ). Preferably I'd be using the inspiron case (and therefore motherboard), but I realised I could potentially swap the processors round. The only problem is I don't understand whether they're compatible or not, and overall which one is the better processor. Dual core at 1.6ghz or single at 2.2? ( speedy stuff we're talking about here, I know ) One socket is pga48 and the other ppga478, they seem quite similar but I have no idea what they mean and whether they are interchangeable...

Any advice about or on what can be done with the processors would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I don't think you can "mash" them up together. From the looks of things they both use different sockets, so they can't be interchangable. Even if they were, the BIOS still needs to be able to support them, which is pretty unlikely.

Your current laptop seems to be the better one anyway, but if it's breaking then maybe you should consider buying a new laptop. Seeing as you're a student, you should wait until the student offers starts. Something with an i3 will beat both laptops.

1545 uses GM45 chipset which is socket P, that T2050 is a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo cpu and socket M, so your other laptop is probably a 945 chipset. Cpus aren't interchangeable.
I put a T9800 in my 1545 which was smashing fast so it supports some very good Core 2 Duo cpus and cooling won't be an issue. Got stolen though .

In single threaded apps the Celeron would probably own the T2050 but in multi threaded the core duo might take the lead but probably not by a whole lot as its basically 2 pentium Ms.

Just considering the benefit of gaining a more structurally sound laptop I think I'm going to go for the Dell. If it annoys me with it's single core-ness, as Justintime has done I'll drop in anew processor. As I's already said this won't be my main computer so having it one piece is actually more important than its multi threaded application prowess. I'd rather not spend more money on another laptop ( even with student offers ) though.

thanks for the help!

Wait, if the old advent laptop just needs new hinges, why not just get some new hinges and replace them. I've replaced a few myself and there fairly easy to do.

Frankenbuild laptops are full of problems, though didn't stop me from making one.
