FRAPS sux

I also looked for an alternative, but it's by far the best and most robust.
I had issues with fps lag, then i reinstalled fraps and all was well again

Some game engines have demo records, and a screenshot capture command which will take 30 screenshots a second for a 30FPS video.

Take up a lot of hard disk space, but you can then do a batch resize in a image editing program and then encode with divx and you get a high quality video, better than anything fraps could make.

Fraps is by far the best program i have found for recording in games without the demo feature. Try a couple of the free alternatives and you will realise how good it is.

would a dual core help with fraps framerates? run game on one etc.?

2nd hard drive makes a huge difference, have the game on one drive and record to another, get decent fps, I managed to have a solid 25fps on fear doing it with an additional drive, that doesn't sound good but it's the norm for videos and looks good.

FRAPS is good, only downside is it gets a bit choppy when recording in game.
The video's are then huge file size's, but just running through Windows Movie Maker reduces the size from 500MB to 6MB or so :)
The quality is reduced though :(

How can I encode my videos wth DivX?
So the file is a small size and the quality is good...

I think FRAPS is great, and always get a good copy when recording a games, only thing i dont like about it is the price tag, $37 for what essentially is a very simple program is a tad too high for my liking. If they lowered the price by at least half then i would have no hesitation in paying.

$37! I mean there cant be any overheads surely, a server and some bandwidth lol, i can knock up a similar site in a day, probably less lol

Anyway regardless FRAPS is the best! :D

needs to be on a different IDE channle if its IDE too (as reading to and from two drives on one cable can be slow)

Let me know when your half-price FRAPS competitor is available please.

It's nice to see the OP returning to the thread to further the discussion, maybe to elaborate on his single line post that contradicts the feelings of many on this board.

This leads me to believe that the only thing he thinks "sux" about FRAPS is the performance hit it gives and hasn't worked out that recording demos and then FRAP'ing them is the better way to use the program.

Upon trying any of the suggestions posted here, and finding the same problem, he will no doubt come back proclaiming they "sux" as well.

i use fraps/DivX encoders and a program called virtual dub for the game vids ive got on youtube.
has loads of different options for video and sound, and will encode into Divx format when DivX codecs are installed

If the game supports in-game recording, I generally record with the game (ie COD2), then use fraps to record the demo. That way I don't have the framerate frop whilst playing, and I get a video in a windows viewable format :)
