An elderly woman was in a critical condition in hospital today after she and a man were injured when a car crashed into a Shropshire town hall.

The woman, who has not been named, was trapped underneath the vehicle and had to be resuscitated while the man was thrown from a wheelchair following the incident at Market Drayton Town Hall at about 1.45pm yesterday.

Extensive damage was caused to the building after the blue Vauxhall Astra came out of the Frogmore Road car park, mounted the pavement and crashed into it in what witnesses said was a freak accident.

Police today said the woman suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where her condition today remained critical in the intensive care unit.

The man suffered head and shoulder injuries and was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford

That particular bit of "road" is actually just a small section which forms a 'U' shape around a central car park.

How on earth some people are allowed to drive on the open road really is beyond me

I use that car park when visiting customers in Market Drayton.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was an auto and the driver got all confused, at which point she mashed the throttle, not the brakes.

After this week seeing a gent stop at a red light. Then decide to drive through it and stop in the middle of the junction.

Then after seeing him stop, the light still being red, the car behind deciding to go and traveling for 5 seconds then ploughing straight into the back of his stationary car I am prepared to accept anything, no matter how stupid!

Madness.

Had a good one this week too - truck was stopped in a layby with a steady flow of traffic going past it. Without warning, he pulled out (no indication) across two lanes. Obviously he then realised his mistake and.....stopped, in the middle of the road. D'oh.

I assumed she was hit by the car, considering she was trapped under it. The man in the wheelchair also wasn't driving I assume. Nowhere is the driver mentioned in that article.

Old people!

Some old dolly pulled straight out infront of me on a mini roundabout the other week, she didn't even notice! just drove on oblivious.

LOL, this kind of thing has happened a few times in my village over the years. Building society has been crashed through a couple of times, as has the side of the dry cleaners. Shocking driving is the only explanation. I'll bet it was an automatic too because they were too inept to drive a manual only to find they are also too inept to drive auto.
