Over the holidays Xbox Live suffered a week of off-and-on-again outages, comprising a variety of different errors including problems signing in to the service and difficulty recovering accounts.

Microsoft put the issues down to the fact that "record numbers" of people had been trying to get online, both to register for new accounts after picking up an Xbox 360 for Christmas, or to play games online over the break.

Xbox Live director of programming Larry Hryb admitted that the issues were "not acceptable." Now Microsoft wants to say sorry by offering Xbox Live members worldwide a free Xbox Live Arcade game "as a thank you for your loyalty during the holiday period."

A post on Hryb's Major Nelson blog, which contains a statement from the general manager of Xbox Live, states that January 2 saw the biggest ever number of concurrent members using the service, and the holiday period also saw the most new users sign up for the service in its five-year history.

More details of the free game offer will be made available "in the coming weeks."

I hope it's "any" free game... I'd like to have Metal Slug 3... :)
At least MS Xbox Live is willing to admit it's unacceptable and giving us something that that period of constant outage.

i noticed a few problems but nothing major. Mainly connecting to live in the first place, once it was connected it was fine

Imo they should have given people a free week or how ever long the outages where, much more appropiate compensation than a free game, but its better than nothing.

I think what ever the case its good of them really. They could have done nothing about it like my ISP does when they keep messing up... Despite being one of the biggest companies in the world, they listen to the little people pleading compensation for their Live being down :p

I personally haven't had that many problems, just the guide being really slow and it keep freezing :(

Guaranteed to be something rubbish, or something I already have but I guess its better than nothing.

Are the problems with Live fixed yet? Worth renewing my subscription?
