Free 8600GT

Just a quick question. Currently have a Powercolor X1950 PRO 256mb GDDR3 but have been offered a PNY 8600GT 512mb.

From what I can see the X1950 pro has a faster core and memory speed but reviews say the 8600GT is the better card?

Which one do I use?

I`ve just swapped my 8600GT for an HD4850 but frankly, 8600GT was OK. You can play Crysis (1680 x 1050) at Medium settings with no AA on DX10, COD4 with everything maxed out except AF and TF to Bilinear rather than Trilinear (same res).

No complaints from me regarding the 8600GT, depends what u wanna do with it though

The 8600GT was a very disappointing card when it came out because it was no improvement from the previous high end cards it replaced.

The 1950 is the better card IMO...the 128-bit bus on the 8600 neuters it.

Thats the purpose of that kind of card though. Same levels of performance, maybe a new feature but mostly at a cheaper price...

The 8600GT is probably the "better" overall card... but in a lot of cases it only performs similiar to the old 7800GT - just a few games that it does comparitively well in due to the newer technology that pulls up its overall score in comparison to a good x1950.

In DX9 it performs similarly to X1950 AFAIK but it has the added dx10 capability so I'd go for it. It's free anyway so nothing to lose.

Is it a DDR3 or DDR2?

If its a DDR3 then id go for it, i had one and it was a nice little card, played COD4 on it, even stalker for a short time.

And you can use it for physx if your main card is an ATI card i dont think
