Free Anti Virus software

I know of AVG anti virus but are there any better ones out there?

Personally I use 'Avast! AntiVirus'.. and would highly recommend it.

Great program with a large number of features.

Been using this for over two years now. Never had a problem with it. Its picked up everything that has come in virus wise.

Nice and light on the system too.

It is very important and you should have an antivirus software, firewall and spyware cleaner type software. You should also make sure you update and run them reguarly

Alternate free firewall:

* Sygate Personal Firewall - (Free)

Note: Even though sygate has been sold to Norton, you can still get the Sygate Personal Firewall. The latest version is 5.6 as is available for download in the link above.

avast is better imo.
It has several functions that i really like such as virus scanning on boot before windows is loaded (best way to scan) which surprisingly isn't in a lot of other AV programs

Avast picked up a few viruses that avg missed on a friends infected laptop so I always recommend avast for free anti virus.

Why does Avast say I only have a 60 day trial, thought it was meant to be free, tried AVG too and it was asking for a licence key?

I did have Norton installed but I want to use something else, also my router has a firewall, is that good enough?

Who says that a 'FREE' version will not be secure? avast! offer a free home version to encourage users to upgrade to the paid for professional edition. Why buy software when you can get just the same in a free package? Lots of other free software like Spybot and ewido do their job perfectly well, if they don't then enlighten me, why do they have such a wide user base?
