Hey there

Well I have been using AVG Free 8.0 for a while now and I realise it's one of the best free anti-virus programs out there but I find it's eating into my memory and using a lot of memory most of the time. But I don't want to disable it or anything. So does anyone know of some other free anti-virus programs that are as good as AVG, or in your opinion a good program? I am looking for something that's not going to hog a lot of system memory, this isn't urgently required though, I would just like some AVG alternatives.

Thanks for your help and time.

Is this the right website for the Free Avira software? http://www.free-av.com/

If so, I have downloaded it and it's great, doesn't take up half as much memory as AVG did. I tried Avast! but it was still taking up ridiculous memory amounts, maybe even more than AVG.

lol no offence but AVG is pretty poor. Unless you're on the professional paid versions your updates are outdated and the overall protection is limited.
Not worth the time IMO when theres other, better alternatives out there, or a good paid for one (Kaspersky) is as cheap nowadays as £25 for a year.

If you're going to stay with a free one Avast and Avira are MUCH better programmes, AVG simply gets by on its name and popularity.

Neither AVG or Avast is good. If I had a choice, it would be AVG over Avast for two reasons:

Avast gives out false positives sometimes especially with driver downloads!

When scanning, Avast stops and waits for your input when it finds a virus. Time consuming if you want to leave it running while you're doing something else.

True, Avast may pickup some false positives, however it also picks up more real positives than AVG, I'd rather it generates a few false pickups til they're dealt with, than let an actual virus slip through! Avast is not a world beater, but then its free, and is better than most of the free competition. AVG is not.

Never had any issues with Avast and I'm one of those people that updates drivers/software basically everything all the time.I also find Avast light on resources then AVG,first thing I did on my parent's PC was to remove AVG and install Avast, the difference in performance on an old XP PC was noticable.

Well, Avast! wouldn't even install on my Dad's Vista laptop, so I'd go with Avira. Also, PCTools do a pretty good free AV program too (link is in the sticky at the top of the forum).
