At work we have around seven PC's and an old computer that acts as a server for the inhouse databases and Sage accounts system. I'm planning to change that to a reasonable spec computer that's much faster. I don't see the need for a £2000-£4000 dell server.

Things are tight with the company due to fuel costs etc.

Anyway, I need to be speced some open sourced/gpl/free backup software that's suitable for a network environment running Windows xp Pro.

I just require it to be able to select folders on various networked computer's drivers and time of day to back up to automatic location.

Is there software that does that?

Thanks

The simplest way would be to run robocopy as a scheduled task each day, would give you lots of control over the backup job as well.

As a IT contractor, i know you say your skint as a firm, but one thing you never ever save on is backups. If its that important you need it backed up, i would recomend veritas everytime. Like ronseal, does what it says on the tin and is very easy to setup and use.

No point using free tools if when the day comes, and it will, you need the backup to find it doesnt work as good as you thought. So please, if you do use a free program, test it a lot, make sure the backups work every weekend.

Not sure if xp pro has it, but there is always ntbackup -- but personaly id rather type all the info back in by hand than use that software.

http://www.nexstor.co.uk/request_quote.php <--- id use this one myself, backups are worth the money spent on them, if only to keep you in your job when the pc's or users do silly things.

Will see if i can find any free software and link it later.
