I use VLC, but it sometimes can get a bit picky as i've found it doesn't quite play everything!
I didn't know there was a quicktime alternative, thanks for the heads up
edit - there's something called G-spot (haha) that identifies what is required for e.g. avi files.
Yep even gives you the option to 'Download' HD Trailers (etc) rather than stream 30odd Gig+ to your 'poota... very nice and don't cost a bean!... (unlike Quicktime Pro!!)
when you click on the links you first get the choice to stream it or download. After that you can choose wether to view in the page (identicle to regular quicktime) or open mpc
