Excellent idea for a thread.

For space opera fans, I would recommend:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Phoenix-Conspiracy-Series-ebook/dp/B005GHQ9IY/ref=pd_cp_kinc_1

Was also going to recommend http://www.amazon.co.uk/Origins-Spinward-Fringe-ebook/dp/B004EPYUXA/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1358093338&sr=1-1, but it doesn't appear to be free anymore :(

It should also be noted that a lot of these free ebooks are the first of a series, and are free as a way of enticing you to buy the rest. I found them enjoyable enough, but don't expect any conclusion to the story in the end.

One of the exceptions is the Peter Watts trilogy mentioned by j6m above, which isn't a bad series of books, but perhaps a little too weird for my tastes. However, if you like his work, then his novel Blindside is also ok, and can be found here:

I downloaded loads of free crime and horror books to my Kindle. Turns out they are all these teenager paranormal romance books  (ie Twilight). Now Amazon things I like them and my recommendations list full of them :p
