Hi All :)

My microserver sits at my parents taking a nightly backup. I'm still setting up some monitoring back to here, but what I would like to do is setup a simple email server on it that sends me an email on alerts.

The server is running Windows Server 2012 Essentials - what is the easiest free email server to setup? :) I have no experience with any email servers at all :(

thanks

Hmail I think was what we setup a few weeks back. Worth a try :)

Not sure you even need an email server though for what you seem to want to do. I will leave that to someone else!

Thanks :)

I've tried plugging in the Gmail server settings but it seems to want it as a local server :( I'd much rather not have one as it's an extra thing to go wrong!

In that case I would definitely give Hmail a try, seems like a good free alternative to exchange. Especially for something basic like this.

Unless of course anyone else suggests something better :)

If all you want to do is send email then you can just use a third party SMTP server. Any will do as long you are authenticated for it (have a username / password) so GMails SMTP server, Hotmails SMTP server, your ISPs SMTP server etc.

You don't actually need to run your own SMTP server at all and I would recommend you don't if you lack experience in it as it can lead to problems if you configure it incorrectly.

The problem with that is the SMTP server would need to have a constant IP but from what I understand, to use google you have to use SMTP.google.com because you won't always connect to the same one.

Not all products (eg. the remote access card) will accept a DNS name, only an IP address.

Just a quick follow-up - hmail works spot on :)

So much so I'm thinking of setting up a second server and moving all my mail over to it :D Now, how do you run two servers in sync?:p
