hi guys

looking at new hdd i have been told to avoid free fall sensors as the macbook pro has a built in one and hard drives with them fitted stop it working

is this right?

Have heard about people having kernel panics if both the laptop and drive have this technology. As they interfere with eachother with annoying results, might be worth getting one without if this is the case.

Sorry to be uninformed here...what do these free fall sensors do?

I think they they try and 'park' the drive heads if sudden motion is detected. If the drive heads are parked and you do drop the computer then the resulting impact is far less likely to cause damage to the surface and heads of the drive (as the heads are not on the platter where they could cause damage to themselves and the platter).
