free firewall and av software

can you guys recommend me a free firewall and av software that can be used over a network on a local pc.

also, its worth having windows defender installed (but disable real-time protection in the options for it, to keep computer running quickly, otherwise it's like having 2x antivirus programs running, scanning each file as it's accessed)

i've moved to avg from avast. avg picked up a rootkit that avast never knew about. swayed me

Been using AVG and Zone Alarm for a couple of years now, never had any problems with them.

The only problem I have noticed with AVG is if your on telewest broadband and make the mistake of installing their PcGuard software.

Total killed the OS on two friends pc's. Not sure if the problem has been rectified yet but I blame Telewest as AVG seems to work with other software.

ZoneAlarm I like but the new version of ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.0.302.0 has problems with Spyware Doctor, I'm sure this will be fixed soon with updates.
