Normally I wouldn’t be so greedy as to make my own thread but today I'm so happy to be finally off of the plus.net network I thought my celebration warranted its own thread :D

I joined plus.net several years about, back when they were only known of the likes of ADSL as a small ISP that offered a quality product for that little bit extra. Back in the day they were ace, never used to have problems, support was top notch too.

Right up until the holidays in Decemberish I was still reasonably pleased with Plus.net, even though their support had gone down hill rapidly I hadn’t been majorly affected by any problems. This was until the traffic shaping policies kicked in. Despite what Plus.net say I honestly believe that the Gaming / VPN related issue were screwed up traffic shaping policies and northing more, I put up with the issue for 2ish weeks before I even bothered to peruse it, when I did peruse it I wished I hadn't because it was obvious that Plus.net were either lying to customers or really had no clue what was going on. Latency to applications such as Ventrilo was so high that they became completely unusable.

To top this off I had my account limited TWICE in error, my total usage (not peak / per protocol usage) had exceeded 20gig so I saw my account limited to level1 management, this somehow completely screwed FTP usage during peak time as I was struggling to list even directories! The problem seemed to fix itself after a few days and the cap was lifted however to my surprise several days later I got an email telling me my account was now in the level2 management bracket - "WTF" I thought :P I didn’t even bother to get the issue resolved as I knew I would be migrated within 48hrs and I just couldn’t be bothered with dealing with the +net monkeys!

In short, for years I recommended friends to +net, was getting a fair discount in referral rewards, now I wish I hadn’t of as the poor sods are tied in with + for various contract lengths and I feel partially responsible :(

If you want my advice, stay clear of plus.net unless you do nothing but light browsing!

man you dissapointed me, i thought there was a free gift from plus.net or something :(
you owe me a free gift! :p

I'm currently considering heading to zen or eclipse from PlusNet. I got knocked to Lv1, then to Lv2 in just two days. 20gb is just so poor in this day and age. Just look at the plus.net forums, I once told their staff this would cause utter confusion and it has - their policies just confuse the average user completely. I referred two people myself and felt so guilty as they migrated away in disgust :(

We migrated away to bulldog (chortle) because we live in a student house, with 6 of us using the network, which made it not uncommon to download around 70gb a month. It was fine at the beginning, but after the debacle of use paying 39.99 for 2mb when everyone else was paying 21.99, and the constant threat of traffic shaping, we just thought we better go with someone who is uncapped, even if their CS is dog dirt.

time 2 change for me i think. i may go back to zen shouldnt have moved pay alittle bit more yet get a lot more better service. or this may sound silly but i never download no more so may go to tiscali :)

It's not a little more for Zen though, 2Mb is £35 a month, whereas I pay £22 for 2Mb from PlusNet. I'm not saying I like them, and I would like to migrate away, but I haven't found anything comparable around that price.

You are joking, right?

Unless you want an exceedingly slow connection with very high latency and awful support, don't go near them.

And axer, congratulations :p

I left Plusnet nearly a year ago now because I could see how poor they were... thank god I did.

Jebus

Never download as in "I never use the Internet and would like to keep the UK's worst ISP in business"?

I'm sticking around for now, but won't recommend them to anyone else (it's just not worth the 50p).

I got them to stand up and take notice by quoting posts by senior CS staff back at them and saying that if they didn't act on what they'd promised, I'd have my MAC key thankyou very much. As a result, they gave me the product I'd been waiting for all along. That product required a move to the business profile on their network, so I get very little traffic shaping, and no official caps (although I won't abuse that). :D

If they'd throttled my VPN and FTP as much as they have some others, I'd have long gone - I rely on both for my day job, so being without simply isn't an option.

If you rely on your connection for work.... the only ISP's I'd trust would be Zen and Nildram.

Plusnet are a waste of time, unfortunately. I don't know another ISP that's totally trashed a good reputation in 12 months.

If PN mess me about any more, then I'll look at those again. At the last time I checked, they couldn't beat the deal I got. That was six months ago though, so may well have changed.

My MAC key request would have been for a move to Metronet. Just see what a mess I'd have made of that had I gone ahead.

I must say plus.net have been fine for my home connection.

I wouldn't use it for work though, i'd rather go with a much smaller provider who you can actually speak to if you have a problem.

The 1 that has definatly got as trashy reputation now is Freedom2Surf. Also Tiscali, but then they never have been a good company to go with

I'm paying a small fortune for pipex; sorry to hijack the thread; I haven't really looked at an alternative for quite a while and they never seem to let me down (stable and pretty fast).

How do they rate these days against Zen / Nildram?

Lots of people seem unhappy about the traffic shaping... Nilly is owned by Pipex now though, although it's not affected the service so far.

Made up my mind, I'm off to Eclipse. Going to email plusnuts and request my MAC tommorow...actually sod it, going to do it now.
