Free HDD image software?

I need to backup the hard drive with Windows on my laptop to a USB 3.0 external hard drive.

Is there free software that can do this and also reinstall that partition back from USB?

Paragon do a free version of Backup and Restore

use it here ... no problems

Disk2VHD works quite well on systems NT and up, there's also an option to virtualise the disk for use in something like vmplayer.

Macrium Reflect has a free version but it's limited to standard disks and won't handle stuff like dynamic disks (for example, disks with more than four partitions).
