free IQ tests

Best thing you can do online really is take a few tests and work out the average IMO. I don't think IQ is the best measure of intelligence though.

So free IQ tests such as this one http://www.iqtest.com/index.html
are they actually realistic and reliable or as i presume are they a load of bull and just baiting you to get you to pay for more comprehensive services?

The latter, look at the faq:

You can purchase the Complete Personal Intelligence Profile with a credit card immediately after receiving your IQ. Purchase with a credit card will display your profile immediately online.

I think it's ok as a guide, I tried it and it's fairly close to any other online test I've done. Some of the questions are a bit dodgy though, I'm pretty sure there's no opposite of the word street!

If you really want to know your IQ it's probably worth going for a mensa test.

They're ok for a bit of fun but realistically I wouldn't put too much stock by any IQ test, even a paid for one. If you think it is going to mean something to you then by all means go for it though.

How high is the IQ of the person or persons who compiled the test? I don't see how you can accurately test the IQ of someone more intelligent than yourself because then you would have to devise a question that you don't have the intelligence to work out the answer to.

Sensible post.

I don't think an online test is worth it, nor do I believe IQ tests actually mean anything or give one an accurate indication of intelligence.

IQ Tests mean very little.

At most, they distinguish between complete idiots, and not complete idiots.

Even mensa IQ tests are nonsense.

I saw one being taken, and one of the questions was something along the lines of:

"Are Al-Qadeda Shia or Sunni?"

What that has to do with intelligence I don't know, some people just aren't interested, and to be penalised for not knowing such a thing is utterly bizarre as it'd obvious impact on the overall IQ points awarded.
