Can anyone recomend a decent free mmorpg? i fancy playing them but down want to shell out money and find out i dont like it id rather play a free one for a bit then go buy one.

Any recomendadtions

Be warned, Guild Wars isn't an MMO in the same way most are.

Most are perpetual worlds in every sense. Everyone can see everyone else everywhere. In Guild Wars you can only interact with other players directly when you're in towns/main areas, the places where the action takes place cut you off from everyone that isn't in your group.

sounds good. would i be right in saying guyildwars you pay for the game and thats it theres no longer any monthly fees? that is what puts me offi s the monthly fees im not a die hard gaming person so just want something i pay for once. few of my friends are trying to get me to play final fantasy but not sure

There's one of these threads every few weeks, with the general consensus that 'free' and 'good' shouldn't be in the same sentence as 'mmorpg'.

Why dont you try playing the trials of some games first, then pay for them if you still like it.

As said, its very rare that free and good go together!

I started playing mmorpgs when Ultima was pretty new. Then moved onto to SWG then EVE. I have tried many of the other mmorpgs out there including WoW, GWs & CoH. I love EVE but after 6 months I always need a break and its a very long and indepth game. SWG isn't worth talking about now, mainly because Zefan cries a lot when we mention it. :) WoW is a pretty 'kids' mmorpg.

Ultima is one I go back to time and time again, its great, very deep game with a great skill structure. If you can get a copy of the client there are thousands of free shards (servers) out there to play on, however many are customised to hell and back) Worth a try though. I would suggest you start downloading trials and really look for a pay-to-play game, much better eperience overall!

I have't been able to afford to pay for my 2 eve accounts, or been able to put the time in to make enough ISK to pay for it that way. So, I have been looking about for a free mmorpg with a great artisan element but haven't found one.

Most free mmorpgs have bad - average graphics and turn into a grind fest. I am still looking but I am not expecting to find one.

But, tbh, I have done so much with the time I have saved when I would normally be playing mmorpgs its amazing, in fact, I don't think I have played a game in about a month! :O

EDIT: Never tried Anarchy Online, just looked at it and am I right in thinking you download original + 3 expansions but can only play original for free? Hate 'free' games that operate like this :(

yes it's a one off fee, and a couple of posts before this it looks like this gent is going to sell you all of the guild wars games cheap! Grab it while you can! ;)

I had a bash of bounty bay online that's pretty fun.

Although it did seem like it could turn into a horrible grind doing some quests.

Anarchy Online is perhaps the only free one I'd try, basically because it used to be a paid for mmog and had a lot of thought and effort put into it. Graphics engine looks terrible now though.

Download a free trial for EQ2, LOTRO, WoW, or Tabula Rasa if you want sci-fi. Don't go near Eve just yet, it'll beat you up and leave you a quivering wreck :p

I went through this phase, playing Mu Online, FLYFF, loads of other jap ones, they were all ok for about a week then i really lost interest in them.

Played the WOW 10 day trial and have ended up bying it, the addon, and also bought them all again because i now have the GF hooked as well :D
