What is the name FOR the type of older games that are now free to download?

By this I mean like GTA2 which once was on sale, but is now available LEGALLY to download!
 
Freeware.

Abandonware is a term i often see used for software that is no longer for sale, that does not have any form of freeware licence. It's a legal grey area because some companys overlook such while others act.

Tribes2 became free, one of the best games ever made tbh. If there was still servers id still be playing it, infact me and my bro sometimes still have a lan battle with bots. Ah kabatic the memories!
 
The Underdogs (as mentioned) is pretty decent, but hasn't been updated in almost two years now.


Classic Trash is one of the other sites that came up when the abandonware craze first hit.

It doesn't have as many downloads as it once did, and now just offers lists and brief details of games with a few downloads or notes on where they can be obtained for free.
 
FarCry has to be the best "free" game. Sure you have to have adverts in it, but hey, free is FREE.

And yes, Freeware is the name for this type of software.

Wasn't the free Far Cry technically only meant for people in the US? Didn't you need a US based ubi.com account?
 
while Farcry was released as Freeware it was not FRS (Freely Redistributable Software). Perhaps FarCry could more accurately be described as Non Freely Redistributable Adware...
