Free one year subscription to Microsoft technet

Wonder if they will disable these keys after a certain time as what possible benefits does this give MS to give away a lot of free software???

But what about the address specified in the sign up? They have mine, is that bad? Does it matter?

I used my real name and address too.
Can't see the big deal.

I just decided to sign up to see if I could get the Vista with SP2 integrated DVD, as this would be handy for any future reinstalls, plus I've always wondered what's in technet, so now I can have a browse about, and see what it's all about.

I did consider giving a fake address, but figured what's the point? As was mentioned above, they have no credit card details, so they can hardly charge me for something that was shown to be free when I ordered it.

Now I've signed up, I have to wait up to 48 hours?

New Subscriptions
If this is a new subscription, once processing of your payment is completed, you will receive a second email confirmation. Within 48 hours of the processing of your payment, you will receive a third email with instructions for how to access your online benefits and additional program information.

Or have you guys got in earlier somehow?

Vin.

EDIT: Never mind, just noticed where to enter my details and activate my subscription. Great stuff, thanks for the tip!

I dunno m8 but I was downloading Vista64SP2 integrated 10 min after I signed up but I think I had some sort of account with them already "Windows Live ID".

Not that I am going to steal anything, I already have bought copy of vista, its just going to be quicker for me to install vista with sp2 included.

I have just contacted technet support, there is a problem with keys because a large number are being generated at the moment, they are going to fix this shortly, the subscription is free until 30th september 2009, no additional subscription is required after this however you will not be able to download or access your keys

Aha!, some clarity.

Same here.

I just noticed Virtual PC 2007 SP1 so am going to grab that, and really, I fancied the Vista with SP1 integrated as well. I may never need it, but thought if it's free, it could be handy to have, because as you say, it'll save some time having to install Vista, then SP1, then SP2 if I ever did need to in the future. I have multiple Acronis images kept of my system drives here, but still, just thought it would be handy.

Still not working for me

Code:
500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

I've been trying to generate keys every so often since I've had the account in the hope they're sorted the error out.

It's now given me 10 keys for most of their products

Thanks OP for the pointer.

I've missed Technet and have been meaning to get around to subscribing to it again. This saves me the trouble for a while.

To those bemused by microsoft's generosity they have always made their stuff available to people in the industry at low or zero prices right back since the early days (pre internet) when it was "White Box" software.

In the early days they literally used to give away their mainstream products too - buy a mouse and get Excel free - type of thing. Looks like the marketing guys feel a market share boost or profile raising exercise is needed.

Am trying to sign up but keep getting "We are unable to validate your customer information and proceed with your order at this time. " error on it.

I imagine their servers are taking a bit of a hammering from people signing up for this! Maybe try it later this evening (All though more American's will be online at that time!)

Trying to sign up for this, but keep getting this error "We are unable to validate your customer information and proceed with your order at this time".
