Free online two player games

I'm wondering if there are any decent free online two player games. I got a friend coming over with his laptop and fancy doing some gaming.

I used to play Quake 3 on a home network quite a few years ago. Is that still possible or do you have to pay?

Any other recommendations?

Dota 2 if you want something competitive.

Path of Exile is a pretty fun game.

Just to be clear, I am looking for something where my friend plays on his laptop, me on mine, but we are playing against one another.

Not sure of many games for that. Could 1v1 on Starcraft 2 Multiplayer, they have a free version with 1 race. Hearthstone maybe?. Other options are fighting games but none free I don't think, maybe you both have one though.
