Free/Open Source asset tracking

I'm looking for something free or open source that will let me keep a record of all the hardware in our inventory.

Doesnt need to be anything fancy, dont need device discovery (thin client based so that wouldnt work anyway), just a database that lets me say desk number xxx has terminal number xxx with serial number xxx and mac address xxx etc etc.

Is there anything good out there or should I just knock something up myself?

Coz you were looking for asset tracking and not paprika?

got to admit that does look like a great piece of software, we currently use a homebrew database someone knocked up years ago for our hardware/software inventory and its all manual but this looks great

How many machines/users?

Be aware Spiceworks is a tad slow with anything over 500 clients, in my experience. Annoying because the software itself is great.

An alternative to spiceworks is OCS-NG (http://www.ocsinventory-ng.org/). The OCS-NG database can also be tied into another open source program called GLPI (http://www.glpi-project.org/spip.php?lang=en).

Only about 90 users plus servers, switches etc so nothing massive at all

I use spiceworks at ours, seems to do the job- interface is a bit slow though.

Openaudit - works a treat. We use it in different territories ranging from 20 devices to around 600 so far. Works great and really simple to set up.

If your equipment is Dell, you could use IT Assistant and OMCI for asset tracking.

OSS-NG is very simple to use but if you are looking for a fuller solution have a look at GLPI.

It's a shame Spiceworks doesn't work on Linux....
