i want to reduce a partition in size from 100gb to around 50-odd, but cant find any decent software to do it. so far i have tried:
vista built in thing - just crashes.
gparted - doesnt work on this PC

It's odd that GParted doesn't work. Does it just refuse to boot from the CD?

on gparted the screen just goes all weird, no idea what it could be.

im going to disable indexing on the partition (no idea why its on) and then try shrinking it to the size of the files + 1gb rather than just the size of the files, if that doesnt work ill try some of these other programs. also ill defrag it too.

edit-
File fragmentation
Percent file fragmentation = 81 %
Total movable files = 264,637
Average file size = 369 KB
Total fragmented files = 27,304
Total excess fragments = 534,981
Average fragments per file = 3.17
Total unmovable files = 4
explains why it appeared not to be working

Have you got GParted working now? I've got the same problem with the screen going all weird.

i got gparted working by going on the "force VESA driver" thing.

(posting using my dad's laptop) it says its gonna take about 4 hours, i guess ill just leave it on overnight and it should be done in the morning.

gparted corrupted the partition somehow =\ ill just delete the whole partition and make c: take up the whole drive, partitions are too annoying for me :) wont take too long to just copy the files back off my old HD.
