Free photoshop type software?

Does anyone know where I can get a photoshop type software programme for free? Mainly for making pretty avatars and that.

You can try to play with paint.net and gimp but this s/w is much worse than ps.

I recently discovered paint.net after using gimp @ work for a while, I agree it's better.

I have used all versions of Photoshop since it was a baby and funnily enough I now use Paint.net for most of the stuff I do such as quick editing and uploading to the internet.
Part of my job is to produce booklets, leaflets, promo stuff etc and I use Paint.net for all that.
No it isn't Photoshop but it's just as good (if not better) for those simple jobs.

If you're a photoshop user, try GIMPshop - it's just GIMP with a photoshop-style interface (ie in a single window, with similar names). It just makes the transition a little easier.

Awesome, I'm gonna give that a go.

Does GIMP tend to be a little easier on memory also? I need a PS type program for my netbook you see...

I still reckon Paint.Net is more 'Photoshop like' than GIMP and I can't get to grips with GIMPshop but fell straight into Paint.Net.
Both are free & portable so give them both a try.
Paint.Net is so easy that all the women in my building use it too.

Thanks a lot, I will try both. I have never really used photoshop tbh, so its all new to me. I just knew it was one of the main photo editing softwares out there.

Is there a version of Paint.net for OSX? I downloaded GIMP but it doesn't seem to work... It just starts up then shuts down straight away!
