free photoshop

Is there such a thing?

I have read somewhere that the older photoshop cs2? is now free to download and use but can't find much info.
Is there a later free version.

I have never used PS before so basic editing suite is fine for now.

I also read about GIMP but someone described it as being very clumsy and difficult in comparison with PS.

Thoughts....?

GIMP is pretty decent, I don't know of any better tool for free.

A friend of mine showed me Fotor the other day. It's no Lightroom replacement but for free it's really simple and I was very impressed.
