Hey all,

Does anyone know of a free Linux based proxy server that has content blocking available so I can ban certain content/categories or use a whitelist and blacklist of sites sort of thing?

Its a small project I am working on and don't want to pay for any software or buy a router with it built in but I know there must be something out there capable of this?

Cheers for any help guys

You can configure Squid with a whitelist file of domains/hostnames quite easily and it should be available for all distros from their package repositories.

I haven't tried setting it up using some sort of category blacklist but it wouldn't surprise me if there was some sort of way of doing that too.

Thanks all, going to have a play with OpenDNS first but im not sure if thats going to work how I want it to because you lock down your external IP, well if you set their DNS on your router, if you set the DNS on local PC's then they wont see other machines in the network by name... Hmmm....

I have been told to try IP Cop with the squidguard add-on so might install that on an old PC and see what it does.

depending what router you have it should work using openDNS on the router and setting the clients to use the IP of the router.
