Is there any free software I can use at home on my network which doesnt require the other user to authorise me to use their pc

vnc is you have access to install directly

remote desktop is included with windows -but will 'switch user' they're account (they'll see the logon screen)

-not free, but dameware can install on clients pc's on demand (providing you've got admin password for their pc) best of the bunch, but not free!

highly recomend www.logmein.com, they have lots of different versions, including a free to use.

Also because you use their web page to log in to your machine, it means you can access it from virtually anywhere with internet access.

Plus you can use it to manage as many machines as you like :)

first you need to know your external IP: www.whatismyip.com, if you dont have a fixed IP then this will change each time your reconnect your modem/router to the internet.

Now you need to open VNC on your missus' machine and check what port it is trying to connect on, then on your firewall/router/modem, you need to forward that port number to your missus' PC

You need to do this for each machine you wish to control making making sure you use a different port no. for each.

OR you could use log me in and do none of this :)

VNC is good stuff. lots of flavours out there.
I would suggest tightVNC or UltraVNC.
Install Tight VNC on to your own machine remmber to set a sever passwod if you've enable server services installed.
down load oneclick vnc from : http://www.vncscan.com/vs/oneclickVNC.htm

get your external IP: www.whatismyip.com , if your not connecting locally (if connecting accross a lan then start - run - cmd - press return - ipconfig - return)

type ip address into the text file with oneclickvnc and update adress.

Zip the oneclick vnc & text file and send to your other half.

start - programs - tightvnc - vncview in lissen mode

ask other half to double click the oneclickvnc.exe file and with in a few minutes you should be asked if you want to allow a remote vnc session to connect.

tightvnc server, with realvnc for the viewer

this is the best combination i found for over the internet!
