Hello all just wondering if any of you know of any good free software for getting a good visual overview of all the servers you look after and whether they are up or down?

Anyone any recommendations?
 
I found Spiceworks infuriating when testing. They say it's free but I was constantly bugged to give info, plagued with adverts, etc. I binned it pretty much straight away.

How many servers? If it's a handful, then PRTG Free edition is great. It's very easy to set up and works very well indeed.

Spotlight on Windows is OK but I'm not overly keen on the fancy graphics and also it doesn't report Windows 2008 servers with much accuracy. Eg it will show that 1 million users are connected but only 32mb RAM is in use...

If you know Linux then check out Nagios or Zabbix.

Mega annoying when I looked at it too.

Go download the Opsview Community VM Image.
 
I've recently replaced WhatsUpGold at my work place for Zabbix. It's far better, does absolutely everything we need. A fair bit of hassle and a steep learning curve but worth it in the end. Probably not worth it if you're only monitoring a few hosts. We're only covering ~200 but we do need a lot of performance monitoring as well as up/down.

Tried a few before settling for zabbix. Disliked spiceworks greatly.

Hosting on a linux box, but has an agent for windows machines.
 
Nagios + NagVis, takes a bit of mindbending to setup if you want it to do it super duper all singing all dancing. But it's well documented, and renowned for being awesomesauce.
