Free Software To Check HDD - Any Recommendations Please?

Hi,

Would anyone please be able to recommend any free software that I can use to check out a HDD and prevent writing to or repair any bad sectors or other repairable issues?

I am sure there are quite a few options, I just wished to know what are the recommended or preferred options as used by forum members.
