Hi all, basically our Backup Exec software has thrown a wobbler for some reason and I can't get it back up and running properly (just had a bunch of servers virtualised etc).

Now this wouldnt normally be a problem as Id just reinstall the software from scratch and set it back up but I can't do a fresh install of it as I don't have any of the license information or installation media, Symantec don't have a record of our purchase on their system so can't help, and I've checked with a few of our suppliers and they haven't supplied it to us, so basically I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to have to buy Backup Exec 2012. Which is fine in itself as we can get software pretty cheap as we're a charity.

But I'm just wondering if there are any free equivalents out there that can backup to tape? With the virtualisation everything is backed up with Veeam to a backup server and it would literally be just backing up the VM backup files to tape for offsite storage, so no exchange connectors or anything required!

I like CA arcserve but it is not free. I am not aware of any backup software that works with tape drives that is free. But if you do some searching you may be able to find a cheaper option that dose not include additional features.

Oh, another thought - HP do/did bundle a free version (so cut-down) of Data Protector Express (which is actually Yosemite Backup IIRC) with their tape drives.

PS. Missed the mention of BE 2012 before - my initial impressions of 2012 are that it is horrible (which is being nice to avoid getting into trouble on here!).

I've only used BackupAssist to go to NAS or USB, but it does a have a Zip-To-Tape option. Works out at about £265 for a single server.

BA doesn't support auto-loaders or spanning tapes - they have a whitepaper on the Zip feature. There's a full 30 day eval so certainly worth try-before-you-buy.

You can pick up an OEM copy of backup exec quick start edition for around £30.
We get them off Dell when we buy a server or tape unit for single server solutions though so you'd need to check how to be elidgable.
Works a treat for a single server solution only backing itself up, won't do exchange. sql etc though but for a single file server / domain controlller it's spot on for the money.
