Got tonight planned out to play BF2 with a work mate - we are both new to it, however we would prefer to communicate with each other using teamspeak and not the ingame voip for now.

I havent used ts since my WoW days over a year ago and the ts servers I used back then either have dissolved or I'm sure I won't be welcome 'oh hai, nvm us, we just playing BF2, carry on' doubt will go down so well lol

So any recommended free servers out there guys? and is the latest version of teamspeak ok to install? (had ts client rc2 v2032 on my old xp install)

many thanks

just run the teamspeak server on your own machine with a dyndns address?

Or try Mumble instead, much higher sound quality :)

I tend to just join any emptyish one off the server list and create my own room with a password.

It has been awhile though.

mmm this mumble has me intrigued, is it better than teamspeak? (by better I mean higher voice quality, less footprint, responsive, easy to set up and no lag)

I'm not a fan of vent tbh, always found it bloated for what it is (and teamspeak sound quality was better at the time imo)

I'm going to try this Mumble piece of software

Teamspeak = More user friendly
Ventrillo = Better sound quality, and easy once you know how to set it up

As for servers, just find an empty public server on Teamspeak with loads of rooms and plonk yourself in one of them. I doubt anyone will bother you. If they do, move.

Been using xfires own voice chat recently, it works rather well and voice quality is pretty good with high settings.

It depends on the codec used I believe, but from my experience, all the Vent servers I have used have a far higher voice quality than Teamspeak servers.
