I'm using the sim from my Omnia HD in my sim-free iPhone 4 (Chopped up sim), and turning on tethering still shows me the "please contact orange".
I did find a site where you can download carrier settings but they only had it for o2 and virgin ( don't know why as virgin do not have the iPhone yet) - but this was for 3.1 and not the 4.0 firmware.
I think you can download the setting yourself to enable tethering, but quite how you do it is a different story.
