Free Usenet

If you're on a limit then you want to download the least you can.
You can easily waste over 700 meg on some downloads if you download all the PARs for no reason.

Good point, I never really thought about the limit. If I do sign up for a limited service, I'll take that into consideration. Cheers.

Actually if only 4 blocks were missing then you only needed PARs +1 & +3. You downloaded 6 blocks.

Once again thanks for that.
I've just had 48 blocks missing and one file was 49 blocks in size.
Another download had 6 blocks missing so I chose the 4 and 2.

Excellent.

what is so good about "usenet"

You can download from usenet the same stuff you can download with torrents, only there is a lot lot lot lot lot more stuff on usenet & downloads max out your connection as soon as you hit "connect".

Used ot use FTP, however, apparantly NNTP is not monitored nor can it be as easily as FTP/HTTP could be. Mind you, I maybe entirely wrong bu what I get from NNTP isn't much of a deal.

FTP can be good, but usenet/NNTP is generally larger in my experience not only that but the speeds are usually more reliable. However, I'm sure for a few quid a month you can get some fairly decent servers.

You on BST-S?

edit - pricewise, Usenet is much cheaper. If I wished to max out my 10Mb connection, I would cost me a LOT more than £10/mthfor FTP. Most of them are looking for anything upto £80/Mth for 10Mb speeds!

Boy are you wrong.

I meant in terms of legalities;) What I download from NNTP isn't against the rules, so to speak. Unless you're talking in terms of monitoring, which in the contracts say they're not monitored in which case  good job I'm on the right side of the law then :)

It could be when you download the Headers that they go all over the place like in picture 1 Picture 1

Click on the SUBJECT (marked in RED) and they should all go in order like picture 2 Picture 2

Now look at the files.
If you download the NZB file you can then load it into your newsreader and all the files will be put there for you.
Otherwise count the RAR files and if you look you can see that RAR 28 is smaller than the other 27. This is normally a giveaway that all the files are there because the last one is always smaller. Count them up and make sure all 28 are there and download.

Now lets imagine RAR 15 is missing.
Download the PAR2 file at the top and download.
Also download Quickpar and install. http://www.quickpar.org.uk/Download.htm
Double click the PAR2 file and you will see this - Picture 3
You can see that the RAR 15 is missing and Quickpar is telling you that 4 blocks are needed.
Downloading the first 3 PAR files now makes this magic happen - Picture 4

One of the finest posts about newsgroups without putting too fine a point on it.....

Been using Newsgroups for around 4 years and I still think I am newstart on it....

At present, thundernews. So far (fingers crossed) I've not come across many incompletes (those that I have, I have had the pars for) and speed is consistently maxing out my 10Mb in Notts and I'm currently here in Leics maxing out my old mans 4Mb (not concurrently obviously!).

For *** I was using some free sites but decided to add some credit to my ******* account (half price, 12p week before the 27th December) and changed the retention to ~90days and this has opened up a wealth of information for me :D

Thundernews say retention is upto ~81days+ which is sufficient for me. The only reason I used these guys was solely because I refuse to get a credit card and from those that allow me to pay via debit/paypal, this was the best one and the verdict so far is AWESOME :D

dmpoole uses newshosting I believe? It maybe further up in the thread but I'm in a rush. If you need to ask any questions, I'm sure myself or dm (amongst others in this thread) will be able to help out.

NNTP port 119 is not secure (see port 563), wide open, along the entire route. File headers are also logged at the ISP. And the PTB's are very much monitoring newsgroups and especially indexing sites. Indexing sites log IP's, some even ask for a name & address.

Can anyone reccomend a good reader?
Used newsleechers before, but would like one with a nicer searcgh function, without having to pay for another listing site

NewsRover? I believe that may have the feature. My provider offers this reader free and it mentions a search function, but I'm happy using newsleecher for it's pure simplicity.

Roaaar, found the best reader ever!!
Newsbin (not to be confused with Newzbin) rocks my socks! Utalises dual core, unrar's automatically, and within a couple of seconds (took 2 secs to unrar a 1.5 gb file!!)
I'm well happy!

Is that Newsbin Pro? I may have to have a look at that. Granted my lappy is much slower, but automatically unrarring could save a lot of time. Would be cool if it could automatically repair using pars too, then unrar, all without intervention.

edit - I see newsbin are hoping to integrate the repair feature at some point. That would be awesome.
