Hi im looking for some good free virtual machine software for testing out anti virus/anti spyware products on virtual machines can you spec me some ?

VirtualBox is my preferred VM software - so fast, light and smooth. Although VMware and VirtualBox have little between them.

I want to test out some rogues on various anti virus engines to see if they pick them up but dont the host getting infected aswell.

What extra measures could i take for decreasing the possibility of the host getting infected via a vulnerability in vmsoftware ? does running vmsoftware in a sandbox do anything at all for security ?

Copy the files to the VM, (I usually use network shared folders), then disable the network adaptor in the VM settings (not just in windows in the vm)

Could run a copy of ubuntu natively, with virtualbox installed and xp in the virtual box.

I'm not claiming ubuntu is immune to virus/attack, but you'd have to be damned unlucky to have a windows virus attack ubuntu through virtual box.

you guys are way too paranoid. with NAT networking (the default in vmware and virtualbox), the guest and host are totally isolated anyway. and the guest still has internet access which is quite convenient. :p
