You get 1 month free trial of gold, and then it reverts automatically to silver.
With silver you can not play games against each other, though I believe you can watch online matches, you also lose the ability to use a few other features of live, including webcams later on this year.
To get the month trial, just chose that you want a silver membership, and then it will say you are entitled to a month free.

lets hope i don't have the problems i had with original xbox i must get my harddrive also anyone got some sites which have them in stock at retail or cheaper
