FreeMedia Player Plugin - Surround Sound

Does anyone know of a free, or cheap, media player plugin that enables use of surround sound.

Im on Windows 7 x64.

Got VLC but doesn't seem to send anything to the rear side speakers! Its running in stereo too!

Does the content that you are playing actually have a 5.1 soundtrack? If so right click on VLC when the video is playing, mouse over audio, then audio device, and select 5.1

If its not already set your speakers to 5.1 in windows as well.
