I've just started on redoing some of my network as my old fileserver was struggling due to various issues.

I'm using this command to gauge speeds:
dd if=/dev/zero of=./testdd bs=1024 count=200000

My setup is a P4 freenas box and e6550 esx 4.1.0 box on a dell 755 (more details below)

The problem is I'm getting only about 1.8 Megabyte/s writes to nfs network mounted filesystems within the debian VM

I get approx 5MB/s when writing to the local vm disk (which is nfs mounted vmfs datastore)

If i mount the same nfs share on the mac I get about 14MB/s
Raw disk speed on the freenas is about 29MB/s

Gigabit network.

If i use openfiler and iscsi will i get better speeds?
How do I configure separate storage and data transfer networks ? i have the datastore mounted under 1 ip, but perform the tests on the other ip. How can i ensure esx is using a particular nic.
