Freenas won't install on my pc- strangely enough an older version did at one point (nothing has changed)....

Is there no easy way to setup a nas box out of an old pc? So far openfiler and freenas have turned out to be as useless as a chocolate fireguard!

Perfectly easy, don't use a locked-in single use OS like FreeNAS, just install your linux/unix distro of choice, set up samba and away you go.

Alternatively, just use Windows 2000 or XP on your old machine and use normal windows network shares.

I went through all of the above before realising that you get what you pay for, freenas is good but very limited, linux is very good but only if you've got a good couple of months to learn how to use it properly.

I ended up getting a 4 month trial for windows home server and it's absolutely fantastic, everything i wanted in a very easy to use package, personally i think it's one of the best OS that microsoft have created, £90 well spent.

Freenas 0.6* is based on freebsd 6 so check your hardware is on the compatibility list. Hardware support is pretty good although not as broad as linux by any means.
